Vaccinating your kitten is one of the most effective ways to protect them from serious, life-threatening viral infections. In South Africa, certain vaccinations are required by law (like Rabies), while others are highly recommended core vaccines. Here is the standard feline vaccination schedule.
1. Kitten Core Vaccinations (3-in-1 Vaccine)
The core vaccine protects against three major viral diseases: Feline Panleukopenia (FPL), Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), and Feline Calicivirus (FCV). The standard schedule is:
- First Dose: 8 weeks of age
- Second Dose: 12 weeks of age (often combined with the first Rabies shot)
- Third Dose: 16 weeks of age (recommended by many vets for complete immunity, combined with Rabies booster)
2. Rabies Vaccine
Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease (can spread to humans) and is legally required in South Africa. Kittens receive their first Rabies shot at 12 weeks, followed by a booster at 16 weeks or 1 year of age, and regular boosters every 1 to 3 years.
3. Non-Core Vaccines (Optional)
Depending on your cat's lifestyle, your vet may recommend non-core vaccines, such as the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) vaccine. This is highly recommended for cats that spend time outdoors or in boarding catteries.
Adult Boosters
One year after the kitten series is complete, a booster shot is required. Afterward, core vaccines are typically boosted every 1 to 3 years. Keeping your cat's vaccinations up-to-date is essential for boarding catteries and SACC cat shows.
