The Persian cat is famous for its long, flowing coat and sweet face, but maintaining this look requires commitment. Without daily grooming, their coat will quickly develop mats and tangles, which can cause skin irritation and discomfort. Here is our step-by-step guide to grooming your Persian at home.
1. Daily Combing is Essential
Never use a standard brush on a Persian; instead, use a high-quality metal comb with dual-spaced teeth. Comb all the way down to the skin, not just the surface. Pay close attention to areas prone to matting, such as behind the ears, the armpits, the belly, and the hind legs. Regular combing removes loose hair and prevents painful mats.
2. Eye Cleaning and Facial Care
Due to their flat faces, Persians' tear ducts often overflow, leaving rust-colored stains on their face. Wipe their eyes daily using a damp cotton pad or a specialized eye cleaning wipe. Gently dry the area afterward to prevent skin fold infections.
3. Bathing Your Persian
Bathing your Persian every 4 to 6 weeks helps keep their coat clean, grease-free, and easy to comb. Introduce bathing early in kittenhood. Use a premium, soap-free cat shampoo, rinse thoroughly, towel dry, and use a professional pet dryer on a low, warm setting while combing the coat out.
