The day you bring your new kitten home is filled with joy, but it can also be overwhelming for a young animal. A new environment with unfamiliar sounds, smells, and people requires a careful introduction. Preparing your home in advance ensures your kitten's safety and helps them adjust quickly.
1. Kitten-Proofing Your Space
Before your kitten arrives, scan your home for potential hazards from a kitten's perspective:
- Secure electrical cords: Hide cords or use protector tubes to prevent chewing.
- Remove toxic plants: Many houseplants (like lilies, tulips, and monsteras) are highly toxic to cats. Ensure your home is free of them.
- Close small openings: Block spaces behind washing machines, cupboards, and appliances where a small kitten could hide or get stuck.
- Secure windows and balconies: Install netting or screens to prevent accidental falls.
2. Essential Supplies Checklist
Have these items ready before pickup day:
- Premium kitten food (matching what the breeder feeds)
- Stainless steel or ceramic food and water bowls
- A sturdy litter box and high-quality clumping litter
- A scratching post (at least 60 cm tall)
- A cozy cat bed placed in a quiet corner
- Safe toys (balls, feather toys)
3. The First 48 Hours
When you arrive, set up the kitten in a single, quiet room (like a spare bedroom or bathroom) with their food, water, litter box, and bed. Keep the door closed and allow them to explore this small space first. Spend quiet time sitting on the floor, letting the kitten come to you. Slowly introduce the rest of the house over the next few days as they build confidence.
